NEW BOOKS SUPPORTED BY HNS

Three new books were published in 2013 with the support of the Hungarian Nuclear Society. Several authors are active members of the society. All three books are available in Hungarian language.

The “Safety of nuclear reactors” was written by a large group of Hungarian experts. The book discusses different aspects of nuclear safety. It starts with the description of basic physical phenomena (e.g. nuclear fission and chain reaction). The operation of different reactor designs is presented. The thermal hydraulic phenomena, fuel behavior and activity release are discussed in special chapters. The authors focused on water cooled reactors with many examples from VVER reactors operated in Hungary. Important part of the book is devoted to safety criteria, deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses.

Challenges  and solutions in the development of Hungarian nuclear technique” is the subtitle of the book: “Hungarian grandchildren of Prometheus”. The writing of the group was coordinated  by the senior group of the Hungarian Nuclear Society. The authors give a historical overview on the peaceful application of nuclear energy in Hungary including the building of the Paks Nuclear power plant. Most of the authors participated in the construction works and their special personal experience is also illustrated in the book. The last chapter of the book includes a vision on the future of nuclear energy in the country.

The “Nuclear law in the first decades of the 21st century” is the first Hungarian book providing a wide overview on the legal aspects of the application of nuclear techniques. The authors emphasize the importance of nuclear safety and the need for accountability insurance in case of nuclear accidents. High priority is assigned to the aspects of handling of radioactive wastes. The book summarizes the international legal practice on the peaceful application of nuclear energy and on the decommissioning of nuclear installations, and proposes useful solutions for the everyday practice.
